Where the journey of lifelong learning begins…

The Vermillion School District Early Childhood Program prepares children for kindergarten and beyond. Our early learning program partners with families to provide a strong educational foundation for children in the Vermillion Public School District.

As educators in Vermillion Public Schools, we believe the early childhood years are both critical and exciting times in children’s lives. We recognize each child as a unique individual, learning and growing at their own pace. During these early years, families, educators, and the community join together as educational partners to create safe, caring, and stimulating learning environments that support developmentally appropriate practices.

Vermillion Public School Early Childhood Programs:

  • Vermillion Early Childhood Center (Vermillion Elementary School): The new elementary school serves as a centralized hub for early learning, housing Tanager Preschool, Junior Kindergarten, and Kindergarten classrooms in one location.

  • Junior Kindergarten (Jr. K): An important part of Vermillion's offerings, supports children who would benefit from additional readiness before entering kindergarten.

  • Enrollment: Children must be 5 by September 1st for kindergarten, with Jr. Kindergarten available for those needing extra readiness.

Registration FAQ's

  • Children who are 5 years of age on or before September 1 of the upcoming school year may be registered for JrK or Kindergarten.

  • The Vermillion School District offers all day, every day Jr. Kindergarten. Jr. Kindergarten students must be 5 years old on or before September 1 of the current school year. JrK is specifically designed for those students who have spring or summer birthdays. It gives these students an opportunity to learn in a developmentally appropriate setting while having the opportunity to engage in a variety of learning activities that keep children moving! Vermillion School District also has all day, everyday Kindergarten.

Research shows that an early childhood intervention, such as JrK, develops children with higher self esteem and better confidence. This directly relates to higher student achievement and success. Students who complete a year of JrK enter Kindergarten the next fall much more prepared for school with ample readiness skills to learn the appropriate state standards in reading and math.
